Sophisticated People Vs. Rednecks chords by Jeff Foxworthy

Verse 1
To me, the (G major) definition of redneck
is a glorious absence of sophistication,
and it can be (G minor) tem porary or it (G major) can be permanent,
but most of us are guilty of it
at least from time to time.
Then not long ago, I was reading this
magazine article
where somebody claimed that there was a
shortage of sophisticated people in this country,
which I took to mean
there was an abundance of people like me.
And I started thinking about the differences,
and they are vast, y 'all.
Like, sophisticated people
invest their money in
stock portfolios.
Rednecks invest our money
in commemorative plates.
Yeah, that's the Legends
of NASCAR series right there.
It's probably our personal favorite,
Richard Penny hugging his mama,
I can't hardly look at it when I'm drunk.
Of course, that's Dale Earnhardt,
he wasn't in a wreck or nothing,
that's just some ketchup
on his forehead.
See, Rednecks thinks mutual funds
means everybody's having a good time.
Sophisticated people have
retirement plans.
Rednecks play the lottery.
That's our plan.
And when we hit the pick six,
we're going to add a room onto the trailer
so we don't have to sleep with Jim's daddy
no more.
Sophisticated people
go to art auctions.
Rednecks,
we have yard sales.
And the difference is, at art auctions,
the sale price
is slowly working its way up.
Not at a yard sale.
In you've got enough patience,
you can get a house full of furniture
for a buck twenty -five.
I (F major) love yard sales.
My wife and I get up early
on the week (G major) ends
trying to beat other people
to this stuff.
These people are selling junk out of their
garage they don't want.
We dig through it
like we're going to find priceless treasures.
Excuse me,
what are these right here?
Oh those?
Those (F major) are Tupperware (G major) lids
that have been warped
in the dishwasher.
Eight for a dime.
What are we going to do
with warped Tupperware lids?
Give you a nickel for them.
We don't really want them.
We just need some stuff for
the yard sale we're having next weekend.
You know what kind of stuff rednecks
like to buy?
Shiny stuff.
We are attracted to shiny
objects.
UFOs, beer cans, fishing lures,
if it's shiny, we like it.
And if you think about it,
most of the people that see (C major) UFOs
have been using fishing lures
and (G major) holding beer cans,
so actually,
there's a connection there.
That's the truth.
We do like shiny objects.
That's why Home Shopping
Network does so well.
They shine those bright lights
on those dimels.
We're just mesmerized.
Here's my Amoco card number.
Send me one of everything
you've got.
That's why bass
boats have a glitter finish.
Anybody ever seen a yacht
with a glitter finish?
But they put those bass boats
out in the sunshine.
We're hypnotized.
We must have it.
Here's our life savings.
Whatever money
we don't spend on the boat,
but we will spend on accessories
to go in it.
See this thing right here, Bobby?
That's what they call (F major) a depth
finder.
(G major) See, what it does,
it sends electronic pulse
to the bottom of the lake.
It'll tell you how deep it is
at any (F major) given point.
See, (G major) right now,
we are (F major) cruising at (G major) three feet.
There you go, three, three,
three, two, three.
Well, hell, I could've
stuck my leg over the side
and saved you 700. Well, I know that, but sometimes you've got to work,
and I had to fish by myself.
See, this way I know how
deep it is.
Sophisticated people play chess.
Rednecks can amuse ourselves
for hours
with a sheet of bubble wrap.
Pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop, pop.
Oh, for God's sakes, Joe,
let the kids play with it a while.
You're gonna be late to work.
Sophisticated people go
to restaurants
that require reservations.
Rednecks go to restaurants that require we'd
drive around to the second window, please.
Hey, and listen, could you supersize
them fries
for the little woman?
It's our anniversary.
See, sophisticated people
want to hide their money.
Rednecks,
we want to show ours off.
That's why we put everything
we own out in the front yard.
Let the world know how good we're
doing.
Rednecks with big money
actually buy stuff just for the yard,
like those ceramic deer statues.
Rednecks without money
drive by and shoot at them.
Yes, tougher than hell, but we ate it.
Louise had to marinate that thing
for over six months
and not only am I a redneck,
I'm married into rednecks.
