in Hollywood.
Sigmund Romberg,
Oscar Hammerstein, Harry Ruby,
There were lots of parties
and George Gershwin
always played all evening.
He loved to play.
Romberg and Kern
never got a chance
to sit down and entertain.
Often on the ride home
from whatever party it was,
Romberg or Kern or both would remark,
why doesn't somebody ask
us to play?
The truth was that as marvelous as they were as composers,
they couldn't approach the delight
of George Gershwin at the piano.
I revered those years
working with Jerome Kern.
I loved him very much.
After he died in 1945,
his wife Eva sent me a melody,
one of his treasures,
and I simply had to write a lyric to it.
How did you like the song?
