The Mercenary easy guitar chords by
Bruce Cockburn
Bruce Cockburn

N/A
Verse 1
Em

Um. A long time ago I was a music student

Fm

You wouldn't necessarily know that now
Em

But I was, actually

I had serious intentions

And thought I was gonna be composing
Fm
Em

for large jazz ensembles
Fm

And I studied that
Em

And I studied in Boston

Er, for a couple of years

(And you decided

to keep it all for yourself)

Hah! Did you guys hear that?

He said "And you decided to keep

it all for yourself"

Er, that's the kind of prick I

am
D

I may not be able to sing now
Em

Ok, so he's going to stop talking

now
D

So that's, that's going to be alright
Em

And it was the mid- sixties

And it was the Vietnam period

(Yow)

Is that because you were there or you weren't

there?

Like, what are we celebrating here?

Heh. Well. Anyway
Fm

I got offered a summer job
F
D
Em

I lasted, well, almost two years at,

at music school
D
Em

But, and in between the two school seasons there
C

of course there was a summer
Em

And er, um, and I got offered a job

Which I came very close to accepting

D
Em

For a minute. Er

And the job was with a guy that came back

from Vietnam
D

And he was a friend of a dorm mate of mine,

and, erm
Em

He had a plan, and his plan was to go down to Central
D

America

And spend the summer
Em

run ning guns to Cuba

Er, which he said would be a
Fm

very lucrative enterprise
Em

And for some reason he wanted me

to join him in this

I thought, wow, y'know, it beats playing in

these crappy clubs in Chelsea
D

The crappy jug band that I'm in, and, er, y'know,
Em

various other possibilities for the summer

Erm, and er, y'know,
D
Em

I was eighteen years old

And I didn't have a very well- developed sense of
D
Em

the moral implications of things like that

And, and, er, so I, I gave it some thought

Until I realised that my job would consist

of

Getting between this

guy and people that were trying to kill him

And I felt under- qualified for that job
Fm
Em

And, er, and I - I - I felt further that anybody

who felt I was qualified for that job

Was someone I did not want to be near

when that stuff started happening

So, so, er, I declined

And here we are

Here we all are
Em

As a result, y'know

Choices, Hmm?
Em

I tell you this story because, er
D

The, the person in question plays

a very tiny part
Em

In the song I'm about to do

  • Best Tuning App Ever

    MaddProfessor

I've downloaded many tuning apps before and this one is by far the best. Easy to use, super user-friendly, and they have a bunch of fun different chords and songs to help you learn new music. I highly recommend.

  • Well-Designed App

    Rose the Black Cat

I mostly use this for tuning my guitar, which this app makes ridiculously easy. It also has a large selection of songs to play along to and it helps show you which chords to play as well how to make the shapes with your fingers.

  • Got me back into playing

    Tuliketsune

I got this app to tune an old guitar, and noticed it has a feature that autoscrolls as I play chords to famous songs. For some reason, this was a lot more motivating for me than any other way of practicing guitar. Now I'm actually practicing and remembering the names of chords 🙂

  • Secret weapon

    Brad

Not only is it a tuner (best app tuner I've used personally) but it also has a metronome, games, chords, and a plethora of instruments to choose from and it's SUPER easy to navigate. I love it! Thanks for making an awesome app. From one musician to another, THANKS!!!

  • Very reliable tuner

    theNewPaul

This is a great app! Very easy to use and very reliable, if you are just starting out, you can take a big worry off your mind, by getting in tune quickly and easily with this app. Highly recommended!

  • This is the best guitar tuner ever.

    Caleb Schafli

It tunes your guitar accurately so you can get the best sound. I like all the other little games as well because they teach you how to play different chords and you can learn to identify the chords by listening to them and it is all offline.

  • Great to tune and play

    Lynae T

I love how easy it is to tune and find and play my favorite songs.
