Leonard Cohen's
Dance Me to the End of Love.
Beautiful song.
One of the things I learned
in my parents house
was that the great set pieces
of life
that you think are always going to be wonderful
aren't always.
The two weeks after Christmas
in our house were the busiest
because the entire nation
had spent two weeks together
and now wanted to divorce
each other
and place their children
for adoption
and the letters poured in
and this was brought home to me
I often judge on MasterChef
maybe you've seen it
and I was judging once
and they served this particular
dessert
and I looked at
I said this looks terrible
it's like the kind of thing
that would be served
at a cheap wedding
full of regret at a ring -road hotel
I never claimed to be nice
and I got an email from somebody
who said, you sir are a snob.
I thought, well, I am a restaurant creator,
it sort of comes with the job,
doesn't it? My partner's
daughter recently got married
at a Ring Road hotel
and it was perfectly nice.
I said, well,
was it cheap and full of regret?
Because if it doesn't tick
all the boxes,
it doesn't count.
But I wanted to, being a jolly,
sunny soul,
I wanted to reflect this sense of ennui
in a song.
And I think we found the right one.
Is anybody in the audience
who regards My Fair Lady?
It's one of the great musicals
of all time.
Yeah, yeah, I'm really sorry.
How did you like the song?
