Well, whilst this mainly visual sketch
is going on,
I'd like to tell you a little
about the theatre itself.
It was founded by Charles II in 1663,
but the present
building dates from 1812
and was designed by Benjamin Wyatt.
The auditorium was remodelled in 1922
and the suit I'm wearing
dates back to 1957.
E
Many of Britain's greatest
actors
have performed here,
G
E
amongst them, you know,
the fellow on TV with the glasses.
E
D
But one of the greatest of
them all left behind
a unique record of Drury
Lane in its heyday.
E
Here, on a recording made
is Sir Henry Irving himself
performing at the stage of war.
E
This parrot is no more.
It's ceased to be.
D
E
It's a stiff.
Sir Henry Irving's
immortal dead parrot speech.
A
And now as this mainly visual item
G
draws to a close,
E
G
let's return it again to the stage.
