Intro 1
(E flat major)
Verse 1
And now (E flat major) my friends you've asked me
what (A flat major) makes me sad and (E flat major) still
And why my (B flat major) brow is (E flat major) darkened
like the (B flat major) clouds upon the hill (E flat major)
Run (A flat major) in your ponies (E flat major) closer
and I'll (A flat major) tell to you my (E flat major) tale
Of Utah (B flat major) Carol my (E flat major) partner
and his last (B flat major) ride on the trail (E flat major)

Verse 2
We rode (E flat major) the range together
and (A flat major) rode it side by (E flat major) side
I loved him (B flat major) like a (E flat major) brother,
and I (B flat major) wept when Utah died (E flat major)
We were rounding (A flat major) up one (E flat major) morning
when work (A flat major) was almost (E flat major) done
When on his (B flat major) side the (E flat major) cattle
started on (B flat major) a frightened run (E flat major)
Verse 3
(E flat major) Underneath the saddle
that the (A flat major) boss's daughter rode (E flat major)
Utah that (B flat major) very (E flat major) morning
had (B flat major) placed a bright red robe (E flat major)
So the saddle (A flat major) might ride (E flat major) easy
for Le (A flat major) nore his little friend (E flat major)
And it was (B flat major) this red (E flat major) blanket
that (B flat major) brought him to his end (E flat major)
Verse 4
The (E flat major) blanket was now dragging
behind (A flat major) her on the ground (E flat major)
The frightened (B flat major) cattle (E flat major) saw it
and (B flat major) charged it with a bound (E flat major)
Le (A flat major) nore then saw her (E flat major) danger
and (A flat major) turned her pony's (E flat major) face
And leaning (B flat major) in the (E flat major) saddle
tied the (B flat major) blanket to its place (E flat major)
Verse 5
But in (E flat major) leaning lost her balance,
fell in (A flat major) front of that wild (E flat major) tide
"Lay still Le (B flat major) nore I'm (E flat major) coming,"
were the words (B flat major) that Utah cried (E flat major)
His (A flat major) faithful pony (E flat major) saw her
and (A flat major) reached her with a (E flat major) bound
I thought he'd (B flat major) been suc (E flat major) cessful,
and (B flat major) raised her from the ground (E flat major)
Verse 6
But the (E flat major) weight upon the saddle
had not (A flat major) been felt before (E flat major)
His backcinch (B flat major) snapped like (E flat major) thunder
and (B flat major) he fell by Lenore (E flat major)
(A flat major) Picking up the (E flat major) blanket
he (A flat major) swung it over his (E flat major) head
And started (B flat major) cross the (E flat major) prairie,
"Lay (B flat major) still Lenore," he said (E flat major)
Verse 7
When he got (E flat major) the stampede turned
and (A flat major) saved Lenore his (E flat major) friend
Then turned to (B flat major) face the (E flat major) cattle
and (B flat major) meet his fatal end (E flat major)
His (A flat major) six gun flashed like (E flat major) lightning,
the report (A flat major) rang loud and clear (E flat major)
As the cattle (B flat major) rushed and (E flat major) killed him
he dropped (B flat major) the leading steer (E flat major)
Verse 8
(E flat major) On his funeral morning
I (A flat major) heard the preacher (E flat major) say
I hope we'll (B flat major) all meet (E flat major) Utah
at the (B flat major) roundup far away (E flat major)
Then they (A flat major) wrapped him in a (E flat major) blanket
that saved (A flat major) his little friend (E flat major)
And it was (B flat major) this red (E flat major) blanket
that (B flat major) brought him to his (E flat major) end
