Verse 1
(E major) (E minor) (E major) (E minor) It (A major) was my
(E minor) 13th summer. (A major)
It was prob (E minor) ably
Jun (A major) e. (B minor) (E minor) 32
Grant
Street down in
Color (A major) ado.
An (E minor) d I just remember, I was in my backyard,
and (A major) it (E minor) was the coolest backyard.
It (A major) was (E minor) just so simple, know, just,
(B major) (A major) you know, white (E minor) painted, wooden fence around (B minor) it. (E minor)
A big (A major) tall tree, really skinny, (E minor) and,
the leaves were probably about 30 feet (E major) up. (E minor) (E major) (E minor)
And the grass was just so green.
We had tons of rose bushes (A major) in it.
(E minor) An d, you (E major) (B major) (E major) know, right (E minor) down the middle there was like this,
(A major) you know, probably about (E minor) 8 (A major) to 10 rose (E minor) bushes.
and all around the edges (A major) there was tons (E minor) of flowers, you know, (A major) black eyed seaweeds,
tulips, irises, (E minor) more rose bushes, and all sorts of stuff, and it was really (D major) cool. (E minor)
I really liked it.
An (A major) d we had this swing set, (D major) and (A major) it (D major) (A major) was painted (E major) like, (A major) you know,
a barber (E minor) shop (A major) sort of thing, know, like, blue and white and red.
Kind of my younger brother when we used to play on it,
and I (E minor) was getting a bit old for it.
But anyway, I was hanging (A major) out in the (E minor) backyard,
(A major) (E minor) an (A major) d my friend
Roxanne came over.
Her last name
Rose
Blue.
Roxanne
Rose
Blue, (E minor) where are you (A major) today, (E major)
I (B major) wonder. (B minor) (B major)
And I always (E major) remem (F sharp major) ber, (A major) like, her really (E minor) being (A major) into boys,
(E minor) like, when we were about (A major) 11 (E major) or (E minor) (G major) (A major) (E minor) 12. (A major)
And I still (E minor) wasn't really that remotely (E major) interested, (E minor) in fact,
(A major) I just was still into sort of kids' stuff, you (E major) know?
(E minor) So I (E major) just remember, (E minor) I had finished elementary school,
(E major) and (E minor) I was now go (A major) ing (E minor) to junior high (E major) school. (A major)
So I'm leaning on the back of our house, and I remember it's one of those white, (G major)
(A major) (G major) sort (E minor) of wooden boarded (G major) house (E minor) s, (F major) you know, like white (E minor) washed.
And I just remem (E major) ber look (A major) ing up through (F sharp major) the
(A major) leaves of that tree an (F sharp major) d the sky was (A major) just so
blue.
And the light, just that pretty (E major) white (E minor) light,
(A major) (E major) it makes (E minor) you feel like (G major) (E minor) (A major) completely (F sharp major) transparent (A major)
an (C major) d everything's (A major) really
pure (G major) and (E minor) clean. (D major)
(A major) And like the leaves sort of (G major) like (G minor) flickering,
know, kind of this green (G major) flicker. (E major)
I just remember (E minor) her sit (E major) ting on a (G major) swing of
a swing and just telling (A major) me about what she's
up to.
She's sitting there talking to me,
talk (E minor) (A major) ing about (E major) her new boyfriend, this guy called
(F major) Artie,
(A major) who's like half
Mexican and half
American
Indian.
I (E minor) mean, I'll meet them.
You know...
(A major) I'm trying to think about it.
(E minor) She was telling me about
how she'd gone (G major) to
Skate
(A major) City,
roller (E major) skating,
(A major) and I used to go there too.
And, um,
(E minor) anyway, she had gone up
there (A major) independently,
and this guy (E minor) already knew.
(E major) Rather than go (A major) ing there to (E minor) ice skate,
or not ice (A major) skate, to roller skate,
he (E minor) had said to me,
you know,
I want you to follow me.
(E major) And, (A major) you know, I'm sitting there,
(D major) you know,
(A major) leaning again (E major) st the back of my house,
(A major) and I'm going,
what the hell is (E minor) she talking about?
(A major) I have no (E minor) clue.
(A major) You (E minor) know, something,
(A major) it was just really weird,
because if ever I think at one point
in my whole (E minor) life
that things change, like, (A major) a real (E major) subtle change,
I (G major) just thought to my (E minor) self,
why (G major) would anybody (E major) want to do that?
I don't understand.
You know, here I was,
you know, with this, (A major)
You know, sort of really naive,
kid's sort of way of thinking.
And here I had somebody telling
me about sexuality.
And you know something?
You know,
things just got a bit darker after that.
I think I forgot to ask somebody
first. was so shocked.
This is not how I imagined it.
