The Sorcerer's Apprentice chords by Sterling Holloway
Verse 1
D
Once upon a time,
in a deep, dark cave way down underground,
there lived a mighty sorcerer.

A
F#aug
C#m
D
Now, a sorcerer is kind of like a magician,
F#m
and this sorcerer was a
C#m
very fine sorcerer.
D
A
He could do all the very best magic tricks,
C#m
D
like changing bats into butterflies,
A
making diamonds out of warts,
E
F#m
and changing small black cats
D
E
in to large white elephants.
A
D
Caug
C#m
He had an apprentice.
A
Now, an apprentice is,
D
E
a kind of helper or assistant sorcerer.
Bm
And his name was Mickey,
C#m
E
and he could even do a few small magic tricks himself,
like changing a teardrop
Bm
into a dewdrop.
D
A
And he could hardly wait until he was a full
E
-fledged sorcerer,
D
and could fill the master's shoes,
or rather the master's magic
C#m
hat.
E
In the meantime,
D
D
Bm
he had to do the chores.
D
When the sorcerer was away
someplace sorcering,
Mickey would put on the
E
master's magic hat,
but nothing happened.
C#m
D
C#m
He just fell down over his eyes,
E
and he couldn't see his magic tricks
C#m
even if he could do them.
D
C
One day the sorcerer had to go out of town
D
to change a two -headed calf
C#m
back into a stewing pot for an old lady.
C#m
Mickey, he said, when I return,
C
I expect that big tub in the hall
filled with water from the fountain.
There's been entirely
D
too much daydreaming
lately. Now to work.
C
C#m
And he was gone on a purple cloud.
D
A
D
F#m
A
D
Mickey put on the magic hat,
A
F#m
far back so it would n't fall down
D
over his eyes.
F#aug
His ears kind of helped to hold it up.
Now, thought Mickey,
D
F#aug
who will I command to do my work?
Bm
He looked around the room,
F#aug
and he saw an old broom in the corner.
D
You, said Mickey,
in his best sorcerer's voice.
You, broom -layer, fill the tub.
C#m
D
And he glared very hard at the broom,
and he spoke the sorcerer's
C#m
magic words.
F#m
Mickey looked,
C#m
D
and then Mickey looked again.
Bm
He could hardly believe his eye s.
C#m
D
Surely the broom was moving.
C#m
D
He picked up the bucket
and swept out to the fountain.
E
Mickey followed, hardly daring to breathe,
lest he break the spell. The
D
broom filled the bucket
and swept back along the corridor,
C#m
not spilling a drop, mind you,
C#
and emptied the bucket into the tub.
D
The broom made another trip,
F#m
C#
D
Cm
and another.
C#m
Well,
A
D
A
D
Mickey just sat down to watch.
E
I have worked magic!
E
I am a great sorcerer!
C#m
And he sort of waved his
D
hand at the broom
Bm
F#aug
as it danced merrily by.
B
C#m
Hi, broom.
E
Oh, surely, thought Mickey,
F#m
D
when the master returns and sees what I can do,
C#m
he will give me a magic hat
A
F#m
D
A
of my very own.
F#m
D
Mick ey closed his eyes
and imagined himself
Bm
a full -fledged sorcerer,
D
Bm
Mickey the mighty master of magic.
Gm
D
E
D
He fell asleep and dreamed
E
he was soaring high in the sky,
F#aug
Em
D
way up in the clouds.
Bm
C#m
The stars winked a welcome,
E
A
F#aug
D
and Mickey winked back.
F#aug
B
Comet s flashed through
Bm
A
space at his command,
Am
D
Gm
and they wiggled their tails at him,
D
F#aug
and he wiggled back.
F#aug
Bm
F#aug
Why he just had to raise his little finger ,
E
and the Milky Way changed to chocolate,
Gaug
and an d then peppermint,
Bm
and then pineapples.
F#aug
C#m
D
And now
Mickey was standing
F#aug
on the very top of a high, high mountain,
D
Bm
D
F#m
and the ocean was all around,
Bm
D
an d the waves were breaking
E
and splashing all around him,
D
the thunder thundered,
Bm
D
And the lightning flashed,
and those waves,
Gm
Cm
well, they grew higher and higher,
E
Bm
creeping up that mountain
D
C#m
until they got all the way up to Mickey,
E
and do you know what?
D
C
He was soaked.
D
Well, Mickey woke with a start
Gm
from his dream.
C#m
He looked at the tub,
D
and it was filled with water,
C#m
E
and still the broom was bringing more,
D
while the whole room
C#m
C#
was filling with water.
E
Oh! Stop! cried Mickey. Oh! Stop!
And he tried to speak the magic words,
F#aug
F#aug
but he
D
F#aug
had forgotten.
Gaug
Caug
D
F#aug
The water kept rising,
and Mickey had to swim to
G
the cupboard
B
where he got a hatchet.
F#m
An d do you know what?
Em
Bm
He chopped at that room,
D
and he chopped and chopped
C#m
until he chopped it into a thousand pieces.
C#
D
And now everything was quiet.
C#m
Very quiet.
A
E
A
D
Oh, well, I've stopped the flood.
F#m
D
But, you know, I'm really not quite
the sorcerer I should be.
F#m
I just better get the mop quickly and
D
F#aug
D
Bm
Suddenly, heard strange noises,
D
Bm
and do you know what?
D
Each one of those thousand
splinters of broom
had become full -grown,
Gm
D
as if by magic, which it kind of was.
F#m
D
And now a thousand brooms
were carrying water
Bm
to fill the tub.
F#aug
Bm
Mickey slammed the door,
D
but then what is one small apprentice
D
against a thousand magic
C
D
They broke the door down
and rushed over him,
carrying their buckets of water.
D
Em
G
D
Oh, stop, he cried, stop.
Gm
D
Oh, now I have really done
F#aug
it.
D
F#aug
And how will I ever ex plain to the master
if I only knew the magic
Bm
C#m
C#
word for stop?
C#m
Quickly,
D
he swam to the library.
A
Maybe he could find it
E
among the magic books.
Oh, dear.
Now, let's see. I must hurry.
C#m
E
Love potions? No. Werewolves?
D
Warts? Waterfalls?
Bm
Oh, heavens, no.
Where are the S's?
E
B
The S's. The S's. Sticks and stones.
The library was filling with water,
D
an d Mickey was floating right up
to the very top.
Oh, I shall be drowned.
I shall surely drown.
Bm
D
Everyone in the whole
Bm
wide world will drown.
Gm
Oh, what will I do?"
C#
C#m
Suddenly, a large shadow appeared.
D
It was the Master.
He had returned.
C#m
Oh, save me, save me, cried Mickey.
D
And the master spoke the magic words
D
F#aug
to save Mickey.
And now the room was nice and dry,
and the broom leaned peacefully
C#
in the corner.
C#
Everything was like it had been before.
F#aug
Well, everything except Mickey.
He was cold and wet,
and he was a very repentant apprentice.
Oh, what are you going
to do with me?"
Mickey sniffled.
Well, the sorcerer didn't
say one word.
But he took the broom in his hand.
He turned Mickey around.
He took careful aim.
