Verse 1
I (D major) traveled (G major) from
Texas to (C major) old
Louisiana
(G major) Through valleys or mountains and (D major) plains
Both (G major) foot sore and weary, I (C major) rested a (G major) while
On the banks (D major) of the old
Bonchard train (G major)
The fairest young maiden that (C major) I ever saw
(G major) Passed by as it started to rain (D major)
We both (G major) found a shelter
beneath (C major) the same (G major) tree
On the (D major) banks of the old
Pontchartrain (G major) (C major) (G major) (D major)
(G major) (C major) (G major) (D major) (G major)
We hid from the shower an (C major) hour or so
(G major) She asked me how long I'd remain (D major)
I told (G major) her that I'd spend the (C major) rest of my days
(G major) On the (D major) banks of the old
Pontchartrain (G major) (C major) (G major) (D major)
(G major) (C major) (G major) (D major) (G major)
I just couldn't tell her that (C major) I ran away
(G major) From jail on a
West
Texas (D major) plane
I (G major) prayed in my heart I would (C major) never be found
(G major) On the (D major) banks of the old
Pontchartrain
(G major) Then one day a man put
his (C major) hand on my (G major) arm
And said I must go
West again
(D major) I left (G major) her alone without say (C major) ing goodbye
(G major) On the (D major) banks of the old
Pontchartrain (G major)
Tonight as I sit here alone (C major) in my cell (G major) I
know that she's waiting in (D major) vain
I'm (G major) hoping and praying someday (C major) to return (G major)
to the (D major) banks of the old
Pontchartrain. (G major)
