When I was in Nashville, Tennessee,
I met Red Foley, the man who wrote and recorded
this song about a man and his dog.
It's a song that will never die.
We grew up together that way
When I would have drowned
Old Shep was right there,
He jumped in and helped pull me out
Now the years rode along,
His eyesight was first growing dim
Then one day, the doctor looked at me
With a hand that was trembling,
I aimed at the ship's faithful head
But I just couldn't do it,
And I wished that they'd shoot me instead.
where he lay on the ground,
I laid his old head on my knee.
Then I stroked the best pal
I cried till I scarcely could see.
he knew he was going to go,
For he reached out and licked at my hand.
just as much as to say, I'm going,
where the good doggies go
And no more with old Shep will I roam
But if dogs have a heaven,
A ship has a wonderful home
