Verse 1
(A minor) (E minor) Freedom or jail, clips inserted
A (B minor) baby's bein' (C major) born same
time a man is murdered
The (A minor) beginning and (B minor) en d,
so far as rap goes
It's only natural, I (A minor) ex plain my plateau
And also what defines my (E minor) name
Verse 2
Yeah, long live the idols,
may (B minor) they never be (C major) your rivals
Pac was like Jesus,
(A minor) Nas wrote (B minor) the Bible
Now what you're 'bout to
hear's a tale (G major) of glory and sin
(A minor) No I.D. my mentor now let
the story begin

Verse 3
I used to (E minor) print out Nas raps
and tape 'em up on my wall
(C major) My niggas thought they was words,
but it (A minor) was pictures I saw
(B minor) And since I wanted to draw,
I used (A minor) to read 'em in awe
Then he dropped Stillmatic, rocked
(B minor) the cleanest velour
Fast (E minor) forward, who thought that I
(C major) would meet him on tour?
I'm earnin' stripes now nigga,
got (A minor) Adidas galore
(B minor) Backstage I shook his hand,
let him (G major) know that he's the (A minor) man
When he said he was a fan it was
(B minor) too hard to understand
No (E minor) time to soak up the moment though,
(A minor) cause I was in a (C major) jam
Hov askin' where's (A minor) the record
that the radio could (B minor) play
And I was strikin' out for months,
9th inning feeling (E minor) fear
Jeter (A minor) under pressure,
made the biggest (B minor) hit of my career
But at (E minor) first, that wasn't clear,
(B minor) nig gas had no (C major) idea
Dion called me when it dropped,
sounded (A minor) sad but sin (B minor) cere
Told me Nas heard your single
and (G major) he hate that shit
(A minor) Said you the one,
yo why you make that (B minor) shit?
I can't believe I let (E minor) Nas down (B minor)
(C major) Damn, my heart sunk
to my stom (A minor) ach
I can't (B minor) be lieve I let Nas down (G major)
(A minor) I got defensive on the phone
Resent (B minor) ment was in my tone,
fuck (E minor) it
Long live the idols, may (B minor) they never be (C major) your rivals
Verse 4
Pac was like Jesus,
(A minor) Nas wrote (B minor) the Bible
Now what you're 'bout to
hear's a tale of (G major) glory and sin
(A minor) No I.D. my mentor now let
the (B minor) story begin
Verse 5
I couldn't (E minor) help but think that maybe
I (C major) had made a mistake
I mean, you made "You Owe Me" dog,
I thought (A minor) that you could relate
(B minor) But while I shot up the charts,
(G major) you mean tellin' (A minor) me
That I was not up to par,
when (B minor) I followed my heart
(E minor) Granted, my heart was tainted by my (B minor) mind,
I kept (C major) on sayin'
Where's the hits? You ain't got none
(A minor) You know Jay (B minor) would never put
your album out without none
(A minor) And dog, you know how come
Labels are archaic,
(B minor) formulaic with their outcomes
(E minor) They don't know,
they (B minor) just study the charts
(C major) Me, I study the shows, the fans,
(A minor) study their (B minor) hearts
I had a feelin' I was killin',
and (G major) this music we were (A minor) spillin' out
Would change lives forever,
fuck (B minor) the label, put it out
Friday (E minor) Night Lights blew,
that (B minor) was classic number (C major) 2
Now it seemed as if the Nas compar
(A minor) isons was comin' (B minor) true
Still no release date from the la (G major) bel,
are they in (A minor) sane?
Gucc told me play the game to change
(B minor) the game but on the way
I let (E minor) Nas (B minor) (C major) down, I got no one to (A minor) blame,
I'm (B minor) ashamed I let Nas down (G major) (A minor)
But this is God's plan,
you (B minor) could never understand, fuck (E minor) it
Long live the idols, may (B minor) they never be (C major) your rivals
Verse 6
Pac was like Jesus,
(A minor) Nas wrote (B minor) the Bible
Now what you're 'bout to
hear's a tale of (G major) glory and (A minor) sin
No I.D. my mentor now let
the story begin
(B minor) I always believed
Verse 7
(E minor) in the bigger picture
(B minor) If I could get (C major) them niggas to listen
Outside (A minor) my core then I can
open a (B minor) door
Reintroduce 'em to honesty,
show (G major) 'em that they need (A minor) more
The difference between the pretenders
(B minor) an d the Kendrick (A minor) Lamars
And so, (E minor) I took the fall
(B minor) like the son of the (C major) Lord
On the cross,
dyin' for that fake (A minor) shit you niggas (B minor) bought
For the past decade
If I (G major) should pass please (A minor) let
this be my last essay
(B minor) Therefore I write from the heart
Apolo (E minor) gies to OG's for sacri
(A minor) ficin' my (C major) art
But I'm (A minor) here for a greater purpose
I knew right from the start
(B minor) I'm just a man of the people,
(E minor) not above but equal
(A minor) And for the greater good I (B minor) walk
amongst the evil
(E minor) Don't cry mama,
this the life (B minor) I choose myself
(C major) Just pray along the way
that I don't (A minor) lose myself
(B minor) This is for the nigga that said
that hip-hop was (E minor) was dead
I went to Hell to resurrect it
How could (B minor) you fail to respect it?
Lettin' (E minor) Nas down (B minor) (C major)
I got the phone call quietly (A minor) I mourned (B minor) dog,
I let Nas down
(G major) Yeah, (A minor) and on this flight may
(B minor) I never lose sight, fuck (E minor) it
Long live the idols, may (B minor) they never be (C major) your rivals
Verse 8
Pac was like Jesus,
(A minor) Nas wrote (B minor) the Bible
Now what you just heard's
a tale (G major) of glory and sin
(A minor) No I.D. my mentor now let the (B minor) story begin
