Verse 1
Em
You know, somebody made the
remark
that all your lyrics are like poetry.
And I sort of go along with that.
I mean, some of the things you write.
F#
Oh, thanks.
Em
It's much more
fun reading that
than Edna Vincent Millay, I can tell you.
Fm
Em
But she also wro te dirty poems,
Fm
though.
Em
Oh, well, see, I didn't.
That's one thing we have in common.
G
I didn't put any of those to music.
Fm
She just didn't have a
C#
rhythm section
like we do.
C
Fm
Em
Not like the one you have, wow. that tune,
Fm
Em
Josie, I mean, the intro,
I'll just have to take
that and copy it down
because that is like a tune all in
itself. mean.
Oh, thanks.
No, I'm interested in how
does the writing go?
Fm
A
somebody write something
Em
and then the other person says,
yeah, that sounds good?
Pretty much, you know,
D
we get to gether in a room
Fm
and start playing
Em
Fm
Em
and, you know, when one of us
will have an idea
Em
usually for either melody or lyrics
or sometimes both.
Fm
E
Yeah, that's what I've wondered,
Fm
like some of the songs, they,
Em
Fm
it seems like the melody has to kind of wriggle in there sometimes,
E
like the words.
Fm
You know what I mean?
D
It isn't like a 4 -4 time or anything,
but it's amazing how everything
Fm
works.
Everything seems to...
D
Fm
Well I think that's true.
D
Fm
think that's one of
the hardest things is to...
F#m
E
Em
you have to kind of pry the music open
and shove the lyrics in sometimes.
Fm
We sort of decided at some point
Em
D
Em
that, you know, we were going to try and
C
D
write these little stories,
little short story
C
D
kind of things for the
lyrics for these songs
so as not to have to write the same
kind of pop songs
over and over again.
Em
And you know, sometimes we'll have
D
a great idea for the thing
D
and then when you sit down to actually do it,
there's very few syllables to
C
do it in.
C#
And so we occasionally en d up with
C#
some things
where there's a lot of words
C
and a few notes.
D
Sometimes we have to sacrifice the
Em
linear narrative
Em
just to get the idea.
Fm
so sometimes it seems like a story
D
with some pieces missing.
But most of our fans have done
a sort of analogous thing
D
to their own brains and psyches
C#
over the years.
Em
So that they just absorb the thing
the way it is.
Their receptors have been
Em
sculpted.
That's right.
Well, that's the best way,
if they're listening to you,
to think, well, being that you like Duke Ellington so much,
it wouldn't be a bad idea
if we did a Duke tune together.
What do you think?
How about Mood Indigo?
I just happen to love that tune.
Yeah, me too.
So I think it would make a nice duet.
Em
And shall I start it? Go ahead. OK.
