Verse 1
(G major) (E minor) (G major) (E minor) Back (G major) through the years
I go wondering once again
Back to the seasons of my (C major) youth
I recall (G major) the box of rags
that someone gave us
And how my mama put the rags to (C major) use
There were rags (G major) of many colors,
but every piece was small
And I didn't have a coat,
and it was a (D major) way down in the fall
Mama sewed (G major) the rags together,
so in (C major) every piece with love
She made my coat (G major) of many colors
that (D major) I was so proud (G major) of
As she sold she told a story
from the Bible she had read
About a coat of many colors
Joseph wore (D major) and then she said
Perhaps (G major) this coat will bring you
good luck (C major) and happiness
And I just (G major) couldn't wait to wear it
and Mama blessed (D major) it with a (G major) kiss
My coat (C major) of many colors
that my (G major) mama made for me
Made (C major) only from braids,
but I (G major) wore it so proudly (D major)
Although (G major) we had no money,
I was rich (C major) as I could be
In my (G major) coat of many colors
my (D major) mama made for (G major) me (E major)
So with (A major) patches on my breeches
and holes in both my shoes
And my coat of many colors
I hur (E major) ried off to school
Just to (A major) find the others
laughing and mak (D major) ing fun of me
And my coat (A major) of many colors
my (E major) mama made for me (A major)
And oh, I couldn't understand it,
for I felt I was rich
And I told them all the love
my mama sewed (E major) in every stitch
And I told (A major) them all the story
mama told (D major) me while she sewed
And how my coat (A major) of many colors
was worth (E major) more than all their (A major) clothes
But they didn't (D major) understand it
and I tried (A major) to make them see
That (D major) one is only poor
only if (A major) they choose to (E major) be
Now I know (A major) we had no money
but I was (D major) rich as I could be
In my (A major) coat of many colors
my (E major) mama made for (D major) me
Made just for (A major) me you
