Ballad Of Old Monroe easy guitar chords by
Pete Seeger
Pete Seeger

N/A
Verse 1
D

Gather round me, you Americans,
G
A

if you believe in right and wrong.
D
G
A

The newspapers have ignored this,

I'll tell it in a song.
D

The papers and the TV
G

never told a story straight.
D
G
A

So listen now, I will to you,
D
A

the honest facts relate.
D

Let me take you to a corner
G

of this world

that we call free.
D
G

It's Monroe, North Carolina,
D
A
D

where the Klan rules by decree.

Now, maybe you thought

the Klan was dead
G
D

and buried long ago.
G

Well, in August 1961
D
A

you should have been in old Monroe.
D

It's a town of about ten thousand,
G
D

it could be a pretty place.
A
G
D

But there's uncertainty and fear
A
D
G
D
G

to be seen on many a face.
D
A
D

A railroad slices through Monroe,
G
A

it's not one town, but two towns.
G
D

On the right, Monroe is white,
A

and on the left is Newtown.
D

Eighteen Freedom Riders
G

came in Au gust 61,
D
G
D

at the call of young Rob Williams,
A

to see what could be done.
D

Robert Williams was a leader,
G
A

a gi ant of a man.
D
G
A

He said, let's protect our families
D

from the violence of the Klan.

Well, the Klansmen, they got busy,
G
D

they came from everywhere,
G
D

All armed with guns and pistols,
A

and Chief Mooney didn't care.
D

They staged a bloody riot,
G
D

and the deck was surely stacked,
G

Cause the only ones arrested
D
A

were the ones who were
D
G
D
G

attacked.
D
A
D

Now listen for the frame -up
G

Did the Klan lay a plan
D
G
D

To trap Williams and his friends
A

And make him flee the land
D

A couple by name of Stiegel
G
A

Were driving in a car
D
G

They drove right into Newtown
D
A

That was a bit too far
D

For Negroes live in Newtown
G

And on that fatal day
D
G
D

They'd set their lines of self -defense
A

against the KKK.
D

The Stigols,

they were frightened.
G

They're stopped at Williams'
A

door.
G
D

And Robert Williams told the crowd
A

to let the Stigols go.
D

He said, come on inside my house,
G
A

you'll get hurt if you stay here.
G

And Williams led the Stigols
D
A

inside his own house there.
D

And though this man had saved them,
G

police got on his trail.
D
G

Nothing less than a kid
A

napped charge,
D

twenty years to life in jail.

And then the mighty FBI
G

joined in

to help the Klan,
D
G
D

With vicious posters tacked up
A

in post offices through the land,
D

Saying Rob was armed and dangerous,

G

and schizophrenic too,
D
G

As though to shoot him down
D

on sight
A

would be the safest thing to do.
D

But Rob escaped to Canada,
G

and then to Mexico,
D
G

an d now he stays in Cuba
A
D

where the FBI can't go.
G
A
D
G
D
A
D

And now a make -believe trial
G

comes in 1962
D
G

an d we are wondering
D

if in Monroe
A

that justice can come through.
D

Perhaps when it gets

to the Supreme Court
G

they'll get a better shake,
D
G
A

But it's in the hearts of you an d me,

the decision must be made.
D

For we are all as guilty,
G

till we make that day to come,
D
G
D

When Robert Williams can re turn
A
D

to his Union County home.

So listen, Mr. President,
G

and listen, Brother Bob,
D
G
A

If you de fend the free world,
D
A

here is a little job.
D

If you don't believe the words I say,
G

go see it for yourself.
D
G
A

Go down and visit old Monroe,

but be careful of your health.
D

There's lots of good people in Monroe,
G
D

but they are scared to say,
G
D

Go down to old Monroe, Bob,
A
D

tell them this is the USA.

They say the German people
G

the crimes of Hitler never knew,
D
G
D

Well, let American people see
A

what fascists here can do,
D

For we've had enough of murder,
G
D

we've had enough of lies,
A
G

And the Ku Klux Klan
A

and ol' Monroe

is due to be surprised.
D

For in Washington and round

the world
G

we're being asked today
D
G

Is Monroe, North Carolina
D
A

in the good ol' USA?
D

Monroe, Monroe,
G
D

I hear those voices say
G
D

Is Monroe, North Carolina
A
D

in the good ol' USA?

  • Best Tuning App Ever

    MaddProfessor

I've downloaded many tuning apps before and this one is by far the best. Easy to use, super user-friendly, and they have a bunch of fun different chords and songs to help you learn new music. I highly recommend.

  • Well-Designed App

    Rose the Black Cat

I mostly use this for tuning my guitar, which this app makes ridiculously easy. It also has a large selection of songs to play along to and it helps show you which chords to play as well how to make the shapes with your fingers.

  • Got me back into playing

    Tuliketsune

I got this app to tune an old guitar, and noticed it has a feature that autoscrolls as I play chords to famous songs. For some reason, this was a lot more motivating for me than any other way of practicing guitar. Now I'm actually practicing and remembering the names of chords 🙂

  • Secret weapon

    Brad

Not only is it a tuner (best app tuner I've used personally) but it also has a metronome, games, chords, and a plethora of instruments to choose from and it's SUPER easy to navigate. I love it! Thanks for making an awesome app. From one musician to another, THANKS!!!

  • Very reliable tuner

    theNewPaul

This is a great app! Very easy to use and very reliable, if you are just starting out, you can take a big worry off your mind, by getting in tune quickly and easily with this app. Highly recommended!

  • This is the best guitar tuner ever.

    Caleb Schafli

It tunes your guitar accurately so you can get the best sound. I like all the other little games as well because they teach you how to play different chords and you can learn to identify the chords by listening to them and it is all offline.

  • Great to tune and play

    Lynae T

I love how easy it is to tune and find and play my favorite songs.
