Tjandamara chords by Ted Egan
Verse 1
D
The police often use members of one tribe
to wipe out another. One man employed
thus was Jundamarra,
the Kimberley police tracker.
But Jundamarra changed sides
and he gave the police and white
settlers hell for three years.
How will history judge Jundamarra,
callous killer or freedom fighter?
In April 1897,
Australia's whites rejoiced
For the telegram came to
say that he was dead
The famous Kimberley outlaw
betrayed and shot at last
And as proof the police paraded
a severed head
The white man called him Pigeon,
but no one quite knows why
Suddenly he had a great ability to fly,
but his proper name
was Jandamarra
Wongarongo man of the jilliard dreaming,
born and raised in the Kimberley
A hunter through and through
So what do you say about Jandamarra?
What did you think about Che Guevara?
they justified?
And have they really died?
What did you think about
Robin Hood?
Could you really call Ned
Kelly good?
And are you satisfied
when they speak with pride?
Are they freedom fighters or agitators?
G
Bloody killers or liberators?
Jokes aside.

He once was a famous tracker
for the Kimberley Police.
And he was sent one time to
capture a man,
a member of his own race.
But the old man told the tracker,
it's time to make a stand
Don't be a white man's puppy dog,
drive the foreigners from your land
So he stole the white man's rifles,
shot the police on sight
Freed their chained up prisoners
in the middle of the night
Formed a gang of fighters,
gave each man a gun

And Jandamarra the Trekker
became an outlaw on the run
So what do you say about Jandamarra?
What do you think about
Che Guevara?
Were they justified?
And have they really died?

We'll decide.
The police brought reinforcements
and trackers by the score,
But for three long years
he led them a merry chase.
He tracked their trackers,
stole their rifles,
Handled his way through stone
Until at last he fought them face to face
And there at a place at Tunnel Creek
He fired his final shot
One of his own race killed him
The ultimate tragic plot
They took his head in a bag to Derby
Evidence for the court
The end of Jandamarra
That was what they thought
What do you say about gentlemen?
What do you think about
Che Guevara?
Will they testify?
And if they really die?
What do you think about
Robin Hood?
Could you really call Ned
Kelly good?
And are you satisfied?
When you speak with pride?
Will they freedom fighters or agitators?
Bloody killers or liberators?
