My father's name is Holmes,

and they were born in Birmingham,

Alabama, so was I. And I figure there only had to have been
one family that was Holmes,
maybe distant,
but I don't care. I adopted them.
They are my cousins,
Wendell, Sherman,

The Christmas spirituals, I have,
while singing them,
discovering the joy of Christmas
that comes out of the period of slavery.
In the winter months,
December,
there were about two weeks
when there was no planting or harvesting,
and the slaves had not such a heavy
schedule through a day,
and there is a celebration,
basically because the slaves,
they prevented them
from learning to read.
They heard the stories from the Bible
and they connected the struggles
that the Jews had with their own
struggles.
And so it was like talking about their family
and talking about projection
of what they could do.
