Verse 1
(D major) She was a waitress
at the only joint in town
She had a reputation as (G major) a girl
who'd been around
Down (D major) Main Street after midnight,
brand new pack of six
A fresh one hangin' (G major) from her lips,
a beer between her legs
She'd (A major) ride down to the river
and meet with all her friends
(G major) The road goes on forever,
and the party never end (D major) s
Sonny was a loner,
older than the rest
He was (G major) goin' in the Navy,
but couldn't pass the test
So he (D major) hung around town,
he sold a little pot
To lock (G major) up Winter Sonny,
but one day he got caught
But he (A major) was back in business
when they set him free again
The road (G major) goes on forever
and the party never end (D major) s (G major)
Sonny's (D major) playing eight ball
at the joint where Cher works
When some drunken (G major) out of towner
put his hand up Cher's skirt
Sonny (D major) took his pool cue,
laid the drunk out on the floor
Stuffed a (G major) dollar in her tip jar,
walked on out the door
She's (A major) running right behind him,
reaching for his hand
The road (G major) goes on forever,
and the party never end (D major) s (G major) (D major) (G major)
They jumped (D major) into his pickup,
Sonny jammed her down in gear
Sonny (G major) looked at Sherry
and said, let's get on out of here
The (D major) stars were high above them,
the moon was in the east
The (G major) sun was setting on them
when they reached Miami Beach
They got a motel (A major) by the water
and a quart of Bombay gin
The road (G major) goes on forever
and the party never end (D major) s (G major)
They (D major) soon ran out of money,
but Sonny knew a man
Who knew (G major) some Cuban refugees
that dealt in contraband
Sonny (D major) met the Cuban
in a house just off the route
With a briefcase (G major) full of money
and a pistol in his boot
The (A major) cards were on the table
when the law came bustin' in
And the road (G major) goes on forever
and the party never end (D major) s (G major)
The (D major) Cubans grabbed the goodies,
Sonny grabbed the jack
He broke (G major) the bathroom window
and climbed on out the back
Sherry (D major) drove the pickup
through the alley on the side
Where an old (G major) man tacked Sonny
and was reading him his rights
She stepped (A major) out in the alley
with a single shot for ten
The road (G major) goes on forever
and the party never ends (D major) (G major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
(G major) They left (D major) the lawman lying,
they made their getaway
Got (G major) back to the motel
just before the break of day
Sonny (D major) gave her all the money
and he blew a little kiss
If they ask (G major) you how this happened,
say I forced you into this
She watched (A major) him as his taillights
disappeared around the bend
The road (G major) goes on forever
and the party never end (D major) s (G major)
It's (D major) Main Street after midnight
just like it was before
21 months later
at the local grocery store
Sherry buys a paper
and a cold six -pack of beer
The head (G major) lines read
that Sonny is going to the cherry
She pulled (A major) back on the main street
in her new Mercedes Benz
The road (G major) goes on forever
and the party never ends (D major) (G major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
(G major)
(D major) (G major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
(G major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
(G major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
Thank (G major) you for (D major) you
