Verse 1
D
(D major) Since you all will have singing,
A
and won't be said (A major) nay,
D
I (D major) cannot refuse when you
A
beg and you pray. (A major)
D
So I'll (D major) sing you a song,
G
as a poet might (G major) say,
D
Of King (D major) George's old soldiers,
A
who ne 'er (A major) run away.
D
G
Em
(D major) We're the old soldiers of (G major) the (E minor) King,
D
A
G
A
D
and the (D major) King's own (A major) reg (G major) (A major) u lars. (D major)
At Preston Pond we met with the
A
Yankees one day, (A major)
D
We got (D major) ourself up in our finest parray.
A
D
(A major) Our (D major) hearts bid us stand,
our heads bid us stay,
G
D
(G major) But our (D major) legs were strong -minded
A
D
and (A major) took us our (D major) way.
G
We're the Old Soldiers (G major) of the King
D
A
D
and the (D major) Kings of (A major) Regulars. (D major)
To Monongahela with
A
fights and with drum (A major) s
D
We marched (D major) on our way
A
with our cannons and bomb (A major) s
D
G
This (D major) great expedition cost infinite (G major) sums
D
But some (D major) underpaid doodles
A
D
they cut (A major) us to crumb (D major) s
G
Em
We're the old soldiers of (G major) the (E minor) King
D
A
and the (D major) Kings of (A major) Regulars
D
(D major) They fought so unfairly
from back of the trees
A
D
(A major) If they'd (D major) only fought open
A
we'd have beat them with (A major) ease
D
They (D major) can battle each other
G
that way if they (G major) please
D
But (D major) we don't have to stand
A
D
for such (A major) tactics as (D major) these
G
Em
We're the old soldiers of (G major) the (E minor) king
D
A
D
and the (D major) king's own (A major) regulars (D major)
We turned and we ran,
A
but that shouldn't disgrace (A major) us
D
We did (D major) it to prove
A
that the foe could not face (A major) us
D
And (D major) they've not to brag of,
G
be sure that's the case (G major)
D
Though we (D major) lost in the fight,
A
D
we came (A major) first in the (D major) race
G
We'll be our soldiers of (G major) the king
D
A
Em
A
Em
And (D major) the king's own (A major) reg (E minor) u (A major) lars (E minor)
