The stockings were (G major) hung by

In (C major) hopes that St. (G major) Nicholas soon (D major)

Verse 2
(G major)
all snug in their (G minor) beds,
While (G major) visions of sugar- plum
(C major) s danced in their heads.
And mama in her 'kerchief,
and (G major) I in my cap, (G minor)
Had just settled our brains
(C major) for a long (G major) winter's (D major) nap.
Verse 3
(G major) When out on the lawn there
arose (G minor) such a clat (G major) ter,
I sprang (E minor) from the bed to see
what (D major) was the matter. (G major)
Away to the window I flew (C major) like a flash,
Tore open the shutters
and threw up the sash. (A minor)
The (G major) moon on
Verse 4
(C major) the breast
of the new- fallen snow (D major)
Gave the luster of mid- day
to objects below.
(G major) When, what to my wondering
eyes should appear,
But a miniature sleigh,
(C major) and eight tinny reindeer.
Verse 5
With a little old driver, (G major) so lively and quick,
I knew in a moment it must be St Nick. (D major)
More (G major) rapid than eagles
his coursers they came,
And he whistled, and shouted,
Verse 6
and called them by name!
(G major) "Now Dasher! now, Dancer! (C major) now,
Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! On, Cupid! on,
(G major) on Donner and Blitzen!
To the top of the porch!
to the top of the wall!
(D major) Now dash away! Dash
away! Dash away all!" (C major) (G major)
Verse 7
As dry (G major) leaves that be (G minor) fore
the wild (G major) hurricane (C major) fly,
When they meet with an obstacle,
mount to the sky.
(G major) So up to the house- top the coursers they flew,
With the sleigh (D major) full of Toys,
and St Nicholas too. (G major)
Verse 8
And then, in a twinkling, (G major) I heard on the roof
The (E minor) prancing and pawing (D major) of each little hoof. (G major)
As I drew in my (C major) head,
and was turning around,
Down the chimney St Nicholas
came (A minor) with a bound.
Verse 9
He was (C major) dressed all in fur,
from (D major) his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished
(G major) with ashes and soot.
A bundle of Toys he had flung on (C major) his back,
And he looked like a peddler,
just opening (A minor) his pack.
Verse 10
(G major) His eyes- how they twinkled!
his dimples how merry!
(D major) His cheeks were like roses,
(G major) his nose like a cherry!
His droll little mouth was (C major) drawn up like a bow,
And the beard of his chin was as
white (G major) as the snow.
Verse 11
The stump (G major) of a pipe he held
tight in his teeth,
(D major) And the smoke it encircled
his head like a wreath.
(G major) He had a broad face and
a little round belly,
That shook (C major) when he laughed,
like a bowlful of jelly!
Verse 12
He was (G major) chubby and plump,
a right jolly old elf,
And I laughed when I (D major) saw him,
in spite of myself! (G major)
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
Soon gave (E minor) me to know
I had nothing to dread. (G major)
Verse 13
He spoke not a word, (C major)
but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stock (A minor) ings,
then turned with a (G major) jerk.
(C major) And laying his finger aside of (D major) his nose,
And giving a nod,
up the chimney he rose! (G major)
Verse 14
He sprang to his sleigh, (G major)
to his team gave a whistle,
An (C major) d away they all flew like
the down of a thistle.
(G major) But I heard him exclaim,
'ere he drove out of sight,
"Happy Christmas (D major) to all,
and to (G major) all a good- night!"
