Verse 1
This is (C major) a story about a
monkey and a king,
King Rebop, and his dream down (B flat major)
(Csus4) (C major) in the jungle. (B flat major)
(C major) He dreams about a flower,
dreams about a bird, not that bird,
ah, that's a prettier bird.
He dreams about a monkey,
he dreams this (F major) monkey
(C major) can play the drums,
seems the king is broke,
He needs dough,
and there's a missionary. (F major) (G major) (F major) (C major) (F major) (C major)
Well, the monkey heard squeaking
down in Wooloo,
And he got fit,
he got (F major) fit by the beat of it,
He hopped upon a hippo's (C major) back,
with a grin he went into his (F major) dance.
Singin' sookity yackety back,
a kangaroo pop (C major) said,
You stopped, (G major)
(C major) you ain't exactly on the (F major) back beat,
Look at my feet,
and then he shuffled up a rhythm,
Got the (Bdim) monkey all with (G major) him in (F major) a minute,
They were (G major) ballin' the jack (C major) and the (F major) sand.
So the monkey made
a coconut tom (C major) -tom,
found (F major) an old (C major) drum that
belonged to (F major) the voodoos
By the middle of the (G major) week (F major) every (G major) native (F major) was speak
(C major) ing about the monkey and his medicine band (F major)
He beat the licks with his sticks
to a record (C major) by Bix,
(F major) till his rhythm was the (C major) talk of (F major) all the Congo
He had a gadoo play the kazoo,
and the junk men rounded out the combo
One day a missionary with
a (B flat major) Bible (C major) and canary
(F major) came riding on a donkey
through the jungle
King (D major) (G minor) Reebok's a -wool
(C major) ing to see it,
the bigger (F major) hit and make a buck on it
But the monk the king kept a
(C major) -ravelin' about
Didn't know nothin' at (F major) all
It was just another monk a (F major) -k ing
Reap up, (C major) then woke up,
found out he'd been (F major) dreamin'
And upset, caught the little missionary
Read the (G major) Bible (Bdim) in Ca (G major) nary (F major) City (D minor) King,
must have (F major) been (G minor) some (C major) body (F major) you wed
So long, boy
