Verse 1
Before the guests arrived, (D major)
there's still a (G major) hundred an (D major) d one chores
Hang tinsel in the doorway,
deck the hall (G major) s and sweep the floor (D major) s
The beast had been slaughtered,
its (G major) carcass hung in a (D major) blare
And preparations made
for the (G major) baking of the bread (D major) (G major) (D major)
The child on a chair
stood transfixed by the power
As the mother pounds the dough
with her (G major) forearm (D major) s in the flour
Carried on a tray
as if the (G major) head of John the (D major) Baptist
And put into the oven
for its fi (G major) nal flaming chapters (D major)
(B minor) (G major) (D major)
(G major) (A major) (G major)
Now (D major) all the doors
throughout the house
lay open bar one
Behind it, hunched in misery, (G major) the eldest (D major) son
For echoes of a jilted love
in (G major) every thought lay (D major) haunting
It stays safely hidden
from his (G major) family's playful (D major) taunting
Tears (B minor) will never bring her back,
try (G major) ing to (D major) hide their (G major) mirth (A major)
Stop (D major) feeling sorry for (G major) yourself,
(D major) it's (B minor) the evening (A major) of the (D major) birth (G major) (D major)
He took out a pile of papers
where he'd (G major) written his love (D major) poems
Shook out the tiny insects
who'd (G major) made the heap their (D major) home
Crept into the kitchen
with those words of desire
He opened up the oven door
and (G major) threw them on the (D major) fire
Each (B minor) page curled, they (A major) clenched like fists,
the (G major) smoke it swirled in (A major) upward twists.
The (B minor) anger of a (A major) dragon's eye glowed, (D major)
(G major) read the love.
The (B minor) mixture swelled and
puffed and (D major) stretched,
(G major) almost out (D major) grew the (G major) oven (A major) (G major)
And the (D major) eldest boy snuck through (G major) the yard
(D major) While the (B minor) moon it (A major) watched above (D major) him
(A major) (D major) (G major)
(A major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
(G major) (D major) (G major) (D major)
Well it took three men to lift it out,
they cried, we've just been blessed
We'll live off bread for three whole weeks
and (G major) feed the cats the (D major) rest
Well others just dismissed it
as a mishap (G major) with the (D major) East
Their brains in their bellies,
eager to begin (G major) the feast (D major)
Well the (B minor) councillors all (A major) took their places
With (G major) bloodshot cheeks on
(A major) pockmarked (B flatsus4) faces
The (A major) (B minor) pastor's wife offered (A major) her a plate
And (D major) Mother lowered (G major) the knife (A major) (G major)
Now (D major) sooner had the cutting edge
pierced (A major) the (G major) tender crust
(D major) The guests were all blown backwards
with a (G major) vi olent noxious gust
The (D major) most moving words of passion
(B minor) never heard in their lives
(D major) Were spraying all directions
as daggers, darts and knives (G major) (D major)
Madden rushed to the front door,
a wave of (G major) shrieks and (D major) howls
Some fallen down,
riddled with the shrapnel (G major) of vow (D major) els
Pinned onto the wall,
one was (G major) shown his good (D major) bye
Slumped with a hole sharp centred,
stick (G major) ing from his eye (D major) (B minor) (C minor) (B flatsus4) (B flat major) (A major) (G major)
(B flatsus4) (G major) (C minor) (B minor) (A major) (B flat major) (A major)
(D major) (G major) (B flatsus4)
(G major) A (B minor) thousand tiny bits of crust
(G major) Spread where the (D major) bodies lay (G major)
A (G major) (D major) soldier kicked the (G major) front door (D major) in
And (B minor) it was Christmas (A major) Day (D major)
