Intro 1

Verse 1
D
(D major) Well, God blessed my daddy,
I learned so much from him
You know, he taught me at an early age,
A
I had to sink or swim (A major)
D
He said, boy, (D major) that old river of life
G
can wash away your dreams (G major)
D
A
So you (D major) gotta keep right on kickin', (A major)
son,
D
swimmin' up the (D major) street
Well, before I knew it,
I was out there on the street
That old gal called Lady Luck,
A
she wasn't kind to me (A major)
D
As a (D major) matter of fact,
G
you could say she was downright (G major) mean
D
A
She kept me (D major) in way over my (A major) head,
Dm
swimmin' up the street (D minor)
D
 (D major) Swimmin' upstream,
swimmin' upstream
Findin' every inch of the way
A
for a poor boy's dream (A major)
D
Things will get rough, (D major)
G
times will get lean (G major)
D
But the (D major) only choice you've got's
A
(A major) to keep swimmin' upstream
D
 (D major)

 (D major) (D minor) Well,
D
every time (D major) I thought
my ship was coming in
That old tide would turn
A
and take it back out again (A major)
D
Well if I (D major) just lay back and float
G
I'll be in trouble deep (G major)
D
A
So I (D major) gotta keep workin' at it, (A major) kickin' at it,
D
swimmin' upstream (D major)
Swimmin' upstream, swimmin' upstream
If I can never itch in the way
A
for a poor boy's dream (A major)
D
But things will get to (D major) rough,
G
