Verse 1
C
F
(C major) I was born on Stagger Mountain (F major)
C
F
in the sun (C major) shine and the snow (F major)
C
Bb
And (C major) leavin' was the first (B flat major)
F
G
mis (F major) take I  (G major) made;
C
G
But I (C major) hungered for the (G major) shadows
F
in the (F major) valley down below
C
(C major) And the girl that danced the
Bb
C
(B flat major) tune the devil played. (C major)
F
Her smile was like the (F major) blindin' light
C
F
of sun (C major) shine on the snow (F major)
C
And the (C major) flashin' of her
Bb
F
G
(B flat major) hair was (F major) black as sin. (G major)
C
G
And her (C major) body set the smokes (G major) of hell
F
C
a-boilin' (F major) in in my skull (C major)
Bb
When the fiddle of the (B flat major) devil
C
made her spin. (C major)
F
Morning (F major) sunshine [sunshine] high
C
on the (C major) mountain,
G
F
C
Where the air  (G major)  (F major) is pure and  (C major) cold;
G
F
C
But there's (G major) darkness (F major) in the (C major) shadows
Bb
C
In the (B flat major) canyons of my soul. (C major)
F
The lantern cast a shadow (F major)
C
F
like a (C major) demon on the wall (F major)
C
And (C major) the naked sweat was
Bb
F
G
 (B flat major) breathin'  (F major) on her  (G major) skin;
C
G
Then the room (C major) was spinning (G major) closer
F
C
as her (F major) clothes began to fall (C major)
And the eagle started
Bb
C
screamin'  (B flat major) in my  (C major) brain;
F
Then I saw the laughin' (F major) dagger
C
F
and I (C major) heard the devil scream (F major)
C
And her (C major) bleeding heart was
Bb
F
G
(B flat major) beating (F major) in my (G major) hand.
C
G
Then the dark (C major) ness blew away (G major) and
F
C
I was standin' (F major) by a tree (C major)
With a hanging rope a-danglin'
Bb
C
(B flat major) from from a limb. (C major)
F
Morning (F major) sunshine [sunshine] high
C
on the (C major) mountain,
G
F
C
Where the  (G major) air  (F major) is pure and  (C major) cold;
G
F
C
But there's (G major) darkness (F major) in the (C major) shadows
Bb
In the canyons (B flat major) of my soul.
