Verse 1
(D major) I can (G major) well recall the first
(D major) time I (C major) ever put (A minor) to sea
It (G major) was on the old (D major)
'Calcutta' in (C major) (A major) 1853
I was (G major) just a lad of four (D major) teen years,
a (C major) midshipman to be (A major)
To (D major) make my way in sail (A minor) ing ships of the
(G major) Royal Navy
(D major) (B minor) (A major)
Verse 2
(G major) (D major)
By the time (G major) that I was twenty- (D major) one I'd
(C major) sailed the world around (A minor)
(G major) Weathered storms in the (D major) China seas
with the (C major) hatches battened down (A major)
And (G major) made my way by star (D major) light
off the coast (C major) of Newfoundland
(A major) And (D major) dined on beer and (A minor) herrings while the
(G major) waves blew all around
(D major) (F sharp minor) (B minor) (A major) (G major) (D major)

Verse 3
(B minor) I live in retirement now
And through my (E minor) window (E major) comes
the sound of seagulls (E minor)
And (G major) sets my mind (E minor) remem (B minor) bering
The evening stars like memories sail
far (E major) beyond the distant trees
Way (E minor) out across the open seas
I hear (A major) them sing
Verse 4
Oh the (G major) wooden ships they (D major) turned
to iron and the (A minor) iron ships to steel
And (G major) shed their sails like (D major) au tumn leaves
with the (C major) turning (A minor) of the wheel (A major)
And (G major) I was given cap (D major) tain's rank
and soon (C major) took un (A minor) der me (A major)
The proudest (D major) ship that (A minor) ever
sailed for (G major) queen and country
(D major) (B minor) (A major)

Verse 5
Ah, the (G major) old queen she (D major) passed away with the (C major) new born (A minor) cen tury
And (G major) I received my call
(D major) ing up (C major) to the admiralty
(A major) The (G major) sands ran through the hourglass (D major)
each (C major) day more rap (A major) idly
As we watched (D major) the growing (A minor) of the fleets
of (G major) high Germany
(D major) (B minor) (A major) (G major) (D major)
Verse 6
(B minor) So at last the Great War blazed
I waited (E major) with the (E minor) passing (B minor) days
The call (E minor) to arms that never came
(B minor) Writing letters (E minor) (B minor)

I may be old now in your eyes
But all (E major) my years have made me wise
You (E minor) don't see where the danger lies
Oh call (A major) me back, call me back
Verse 8
(G major) But the war it (D major) ran its course,
they could (C major) find no use (A minor) for me
(G major) And I live in the country (D major) now,
grand (C major) children on my knee (A major)
And (G major) sometimes think in all (D major) this
world the (C major) saddest thing to be (A major)
Old (D major) admirals who (A minor) feel the wind, an (G major) d never put to sea

Now (G major) just like you I've (D major) sailed my dreams
like (C major) ships across (A minor) the sea
And (G major) some of them they've (D major) come on rocks,
and some (C major) faced mutiny
(A major) And (G major) when they're sunken one (D major) by
one I'll (C major) join that com (A major) pany
Old (D major) admirals who (A minor) feel the wind,
an (G major) d never put to sea (D major)
(B minor) (A major) (G major) (F sharp minor) (E minor) (A major)
