Verse 1
(D major) It was the 3rd of June,
another sleepy, (A major) (D major) dusty, delta day
And I was out chopping cotton
and my (A major) brother was (D major) baling hay
And at din (G major) nertime we stopped
and walked back to the house to eat
Mama hollered (D major) out the back door,
y 'all remember, to wipe your feet
And then she said,
(G major) I got some news this morning
from Choctaw Ridge
Today, (D major) Billy Joe McAllister
Jumped (C major) off the Tallahatchie Bridge (D major)
And Papa said to Mama
As he (A major) passed around the
(D major) black -eyed peas
Well, Billy Joe never had a lick of sense
Pass (A major) the (D major) biscuits, please
There's (G major) five more acres in the lower 40
I got to plow
And mama said (D major) it was a shame
about Billy Joe anyhow
Seems like (G major) nothing ever comes to no good
up on Choctaw Ridge
And now Billy (D major) Joe McAllister
jumped (C major) off the Tallahatchie Bridge (D major)
And brother said he recollected
when (A major) he and (D major) Tom and Billy Joe
Put a frog down my back
at the Carroll County Picture Show
And wasn't (G major) I talkin' to her
at the church last Sunday night
I'll have an (D major) other piece of apple pie,
you know it don't seem right
I saw (G major) her at the sawmill
yesterday on Choctaw Ridge
And now you tell (D major) me Billy Joes
(G major) jumped off (C major) the Tallahatchie Bridge (D major)
Mama said to me, child,
what's happened to your appetite?
Well, I've been cookin' all mornin'
and you haven't touched a single bite
That (G major) nice young preacher's sister
Taylor dropped by today
Said she'd (D major) be pleased
to have dinner on Sunday
And oh, by the way
She said (G major) she saw a boy
that looked a lot like you
up on Choctaw Ridge
And he and Billy Joe (D major) was throwin'
somethin' (C major) off the Tallahatchie Bridge (D major) you
