my things when I got the news
It was time to start paying my dues
California was beckoning,
just 1 ,500 miles of reckoning
Funny how the twists and turns
of a long road will make you learn
I flipped a coin on the Great Divide,
then I headed down the western side
It'll be just like the pictures
I hit the border on a Friday night
Slowly headed from the desert side
With a hot ply and the dominoes,
Phones are ringing all across this town
I see the numbers and I write them down
This is my best impression
This land of gold dust is mine
Don't tell me how hard you think it is
This place is all around me now
I move to the rhythm of my own heartbeat
I take long rides in the driver's seat
I pass palm trees and redwoods
In a strange way it feels good
And I love this road like I love the rain
It slows me down, but soothes my pain
It takes me home where I long to be
And this is my California
This land of gold dust is mine
No beaches, I don't like the sand,
no convertible, no dark tan
No stars living next to me,
just a few good people who want to be
Welcome to my recollection
This land of gold dust is mine
