Verse 1
Oh (G major) (F major) John, (G major) Oh (F major) (G major) John
(F major) (G major)
I awoke (F major) (G major) one morning
from a horrible dream
(F major) In a (G major) Louisiana town where
they call me Queen
Saw (F major) a (G major) man catch a train
at the rise of sun
With a tearful scream, I called his name
Big (F major) (G major) John
Oh (F sharp major) John, (E flat minor) (B major) Oh (G major) (C major) John (G major)
My Big John (F major) (G major)
Angry (F major) mob (G major) s were gathering
in Bourbon Street
(F major) And as (G major) I ran across,
they pointed at me
There's (F major) (G major) the Cajun queen,
she started the fight
(F major) That (G major) caused Big John to kill last night (F major) (G major)
(F major) I (G major) kept on running straight to the east
As (F major) I fol (G major) lowed the track
of the big iron beast
(F major) Through the (G major) sun or rain, the days and nights (F major)
I (G major) never thought once about givin'
up the fight for (F major) my (G major) John
Oh John, (E flat minor) oh (F sharp major) (B major) (C major) John
(G major) My big John
Oh (F major) John, (G major) oh (F major) (G major)
The (F major) long (G major) trail led to a mining town
An (F major) d it (G major) didn't take long for
the talk to get around
(F major) That a (G major) Cajun girl from New Orleans
(F major) Was ask (G major) ing questions in a room
in the street (F major) for Big (G major) John (F major) (G major)
Now (F major) nobody (G major) seemed
to want to be the one
(F major) To an (G major) swer my questions about Big John
(F major) I couldn't (G major) tell if their
feelings were of pity or hate
(F major) Only thing (G major) I could do was just
watch and wait (F major) for Big John (G major)
Oh John, (E flat major) (G major) (C major) oh (G major) (C major) John, (G major) my
big John
Oh (F major) (G major) John (F major) (G major)
There was an old miner
who was friendly and kind
As he talked to me,
I tried to read his mind
He (F major) said, (G major) most of these kids you
see playin' and run (F major)
Wouldn't (G major) have no daddy,
hadn't been for John (F major) (G major)
He's (F major) (G major) down in that mine,
but he's not alone
Un (F major) der thousands (G major) of tons
of dirt and stone
Twenty (F major) men (G major) owe their lives
to this mighty man
And (F major) I'm (G major) glad to meet the girl
that once held the (F major) hand of Big (G major) John
Big John, these words you may not hear
But (F major) some (G major) how I feel you know I'm near
This town's our home,
we'll run no more
Cause there's a welcome mat
at nearly every door for Big John
Oh (F sharp major) John, (E flat minor) (E flat major) oh (G major) John (C major) (G major)
My Big (G major) John
Mmm, (F major) my John (G major)
Mmm, (G major) my John (G major) you
My Big John
