A boy heard the (G major) voice
of the whippoorwill one night
(A minor) and went out to find where he was
singing. (G major) He had to
walk quite a ways through a big field,
because the
song of the whippoorwill carried so
well in the wind he
sound much (A minor) closer then he really
was. (G minor) And on the (C major) way
the boy found a well worn trail, (G major)
so he stayed (F sharp minor) on it for a
while. (G major) And sitting in the middle
of the trail was coyote, (G minor)
and (G major) coyote was singing too.
He turned and saw the
boy and he said "Why
are you follow me?" The boy
was frightened and said "Well
the trail you made
happened to be a short
and easy way through this
(F major) field. (B flat major) Then coyote asked
(F major) "Well if your not following
me then why are you here?"
(G major) "Well I heard the beautiful
song (A minor) of the whippoorwill
and wanted (G major) to watch him
sing." "Well do you not think my
songs are (A minor) beautiful?",
said coyote. (G major) "Oh", said the boy,
"there good but I hear
you all the time. I much prefer
the songs of the
whippoorwill" (A minor) (G major) This made coyote
furious and he was
jealous of the whippoorwill's
song. He said "Listen to
my night song you might like
this one" And he pulled
back his head and yodeled
out a (F major) tune. (G major) The boy
covered his ears and politely said,
"Thank you for the
song, but I must be going now." "Well",
coyote said, (F major) "I
can show you a short (G major) cut to the whippoorwill boy,
and
where he sings is just over there."
Pointing his claw,
smiling out of the side of his mouth.
The (B flat major) boy paused,
looked (A minor) around, (G major) he knew the night
was passing fast so
he agreed to follow coyote.
But coyote's trail was
rough and (F major) rocky. And the boy
fell in (G major) quite a few
gopher (A minor) holes along the way. (C major) Coyote
(G major) turned around
and laughed (A minor) and he yelled
to the boy. "Were almost
(G major) there, hurry up." (C major) Coyote was at a
(G major) full trot but the boy
had just fallen again and hurt his
(F major) knee. (G major) And (F major) by the time
he got to the place where the
whip (A minor) poorwill had been
singing all night,
(G major) it was (F major) morning. (A minor) Whippoorwill was
(A major) gone. (A minor) And (G major) so was coyote,
in fact he could hear
(C major) coyote's songs (G major) in another field.
So the boy turned and
headed (F major) for home, covered with burrs,
(G major) misq bites (A minor) and a
skinned up knee. (F major) (G major) And it was
many summers (A minor) later
when the boy became a wiser
man. (G major) (A minor) And he realized,
there are no shortcuts
to find something you really
love. (G major) But there are many trails
in this life. (G major) So you (G major) must
stay true to your path,
and always keep and eye out
for coyote
