(G major) Now (E flat major) Jesus loved Martha
and her (G minor) sister and Lazarus.
(G major) When he had heard, therefore,
(G minor) that he was sick,

in the same (G major) place where he was.
Then after that saith (G minor) he to his dis (G major) ciples,
Let us go into Judea again.
His disciples say unto him,
Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee,
and goest thou thither again?

Are there not (F major) twelve hours in the (E minor) day?
(G major) If any man walk in the day,
he stumbleth not,
because he seeth (F sharp minor) the light of this world.
(G major) But if a man walk in the night,
he stumbleth,
because there is no light in him.
These things said he,
and after that he saith unto them,
Our friend Laz (F major) arus sleepeth, (E minor) but I (A major) go,
that I may awake him out of sleep.
(G major) Then said his disciples,
Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well.
Howbeit Jesus spake of his death,
but they thought that he had
spoken

(F major) Then Jesus said (E major) unto them plainly,
(G major) Lazarus is dead.
And I am (F sharp minor) glad for your sakes
that I was not there,
to the intent ye may be
(G major) lieve.
Nevertheless let us go unto
him.
Then said Thomas,
which is called Didymus,
unto his fellow disciples,
Let us (E flat major) also go,
(F major) that we may die with him.
(G major) Then, when Jesus came,
he (F major) found that he
had lain in the grave
(G major) four days already.
Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem,
about fifteen furlongs off,
and many of the Jews
came (F major) to Martha and Mary
to comfort (E major) them concerning their (G major) brother.
Then Martha,
as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming,
went and met him.
But Mary sat still in the house.
Then said Martha unto (G minor) Jesus,
Lord, if thou hadst (F major) been here,
my (G minor) brother had not died.
But I know that even now
whatsoever thou wilt ask of God,
(G major) God will give it thee.
Je (F major) sus saith unto her,
(G major) Thy brother shall rise again.
Martha saith unto him,
I know (F sharp minor) that he shall rise again
in the resurrection (G major) at the
last day. Jesus said (F sharp minor) unto her,
I (E minor) am the resurrection,
(G major) and the life.
He that believeth (F sharp minor) in me,
though (G major) he were dead, yet (F major) shall he live.
(G major) and whosoever liveth and believeth in me
shall never die.
Believest thou this?
(F sharp minor) She saith unto him, (G major) Yea, Lord,
(F major) I believe that thou art the Christ,
the (G major) Son of God,
which should come into the world.
And when she had so said,
(E minor) she went her way,
and (G major) called Mary her sister secretly,
saying, The (F sharp minor) Master is come,
(G major) and calleth for thee.
As soon as she heard (D major) that,
she (G major) arose quickly, and came unto him.
Now, Jesus was not yet come into the town,
but was in that place where
Martha met him.
The Jews then, which were with her in the house,
and comforted her,
when they saw Mary that she rose up hast (F major) ily and went out, fol (F sharp minor) lowed her, saying,
She goeth into the (G major) grave,
to weep there.
Then when Mary was come where Jesus
was, and saw him,
she fell down at his feet,
saying unto him, Lord,
if thou hadst been here,
my brother had not died.
When Jesus therefore saw (F major) her weeping,
and the Jews also weep (G major) ing which came with her,
he groaned in the Spirit,
and was troubled, and said,
(F sharp minor) Where have ye laid (G major) him?
They (F major) said unto him, Lord, come and see.
(G major) Jesus wept.
Then said the Jews,
Behold how he loved him.
(F sharp minor) An d some of them said, Could not this man which
opened the eyes of the blind (G major) have caused
that even this man
should not have died?
(F major) Jesus therefore,
again (F sharp minor) groan ing in himself,
(G major) cometh to the grave.
It was (F sharp minor) a cave,
and a stone (G major) lay upon it.
Jesus said, Take (F sharp minor) ye away the stone.
(G major) Martha, the sister of him that was dead,
saith unto him, Lord, by this time he stinketh,
for he hath been dead four days.
Jesus saith unto her,
Said I not unto (F sharp minor) thee, that if thou wouldest believe,
(G major) thou shouldest (G minor) see the glory of (F major) God?
(G major) Then they took away (E major) the stone
from the (F major) place where the
(G major) dead was laid.
And Jesus lifted up his (F sharp minor) eyes
and (G major) said, Father,
I thank Thee (F sharp minor) that Thou hast heard me.
(A major) And I knew (E major) that Thou hearest me always,
but be (G major) cause of the people which stand by,
I said it, that they may (F sharp minor) believe
that Thou hast sent (G major) me.
And when he (A major) thus had spoken,
he cried (G major) with a loud voice,
Lazarus, come forth.
And he that was dead came forth,
bound hand and foot with grave (E major) clothes,
and (A major) his face was (G major) bound about
with (D major) a napkin.
(G major) Jesus saith unto (G minor) them,
Loose him, and (G major) let him go.
Then many of the Jews
which came to (D major) Mary,
and had (G major) seen the things which Jesus did,
(C sharp minor) believed on him.
(G major) But some of them went their
(A major) ways to the Phar (G minor) isees,
and told (F major) them what things
(F sharp minor) Jesus had done.
(G major) Then gathered the
chief priests
and the Pharisees a council,
and said, What do we,
for this man doeth many miracles?
If we let him thus alone,
all men will believe on him,
and the Romans shall come and take
away both our place and nation.
And (F sharp minor) one of them,
named (F major) Caiaphas,
being the high (F sharp minor) priest that same year,
said unto (G major) them,
(A minor) Ye know (E major) nothing at all,
(F sharp minor) nor consider (G minor) that it is expedient (D major) for us
that (F sharp minor) one man should (E major) die for the people,
and that the whole na (G major) tion perish not.
(G major) And this spake he not of himself,
but being high (G major) priest that year,
he prophesied that Jesus should
die for that nation,
(G minor) and not for that nation (E flat major) only,
but that also he should (G minor) gather together
(D major) in one the children of God
that were scattered abroad. Then from that
day forth they took counsel together,
for to put him to death.
Jesus (F major) therefore walked
(G minor) no more (D major) openly
among the Jews,
but went thence unto (F major) a country
near (G minor) to the wilderness,
into a city called Ephraim,
and there continued with his disciples.
And the Jews' (F major) Passover was nigh at hand,
(G major) and many went out of the country
up to Jerusalem
before the Passover to
purify themselves.
Then sought they for Jesus,
(G major) and spake among themselves,
as they stood in the temple,
What think ye,
that he will not come to the feast?
Now, both the chief priests
and the Pharisees
had given a commandment
that if any man knew where he were,
he should show it,
that they might take him.
