and welcome to tonight's concert.
I'm Lorraine Sakata,
head of the Ethnomusicology Division
of the School of Music.
I realize that tonight's artist,
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan,
needs no introduction,

but I did want to take this op portunity
to thank him for agreeing to come to the University of Washington,
to join our faculty,
to teach our students a little
bit about his music,

and to join the general university community
so that we can proudly claim
him as one of our own.

Fatih Ali Khan is a Pakistani and a Sufi,
his music transcends national
and religious boundaries.
His songs are appreciated
by international audiences
and they speak of love, devotion,
separation, yearning.
Emotions that are universally felt
and shared.
Tonight's concert
will begin with classical music
and for this portion
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
will be accompanied on the harmonium
by his brother Farooq Fateh Ali Khan
and by by a special guest artist,
Tariq Khan, originally from Pakistan,
now resident of New Jersey.
Tariq Khan is a disciple

of the legendary Ustad Mian
Shakut Hussain Khan of Lahore.
After the classical music portion,
the rest of the members
of Nusrat's ensemble
will join him in a program of Qawwali.

However, there will be

no intermission
between the two parts of the program.
