Verse 1
(D major) I woke up very early
Like I tend (G major) to do most days
Gathered up my (D major) clothes, my watch
And pocket knife (A major)
It would be (D major) almost an hour
Before the sun (G major) would show its face
And I tried (D major) to be quiet
So (A major) as not to wake my wife
(D major)
Verse 2
Turning on my phone
Was the first (G major) mistake I made
My heart (D major) sunk when I read the first headline
(A major) There had (D major) been another shooting
And this time not (G major) so far away
And a child (D major) who lost his life
Looked an aw (A major) ful lot like mine
(D major)

Verse 3
I sat there in the dark
For (G major) I don't know how long
Without (D major) the first idea of what to do (A major)

And stood (D major) there feeling hopeless
And staring (A major) at the moon
(D major)
Verse 4
And when the house got lively
I was work (G major) ing double time
Scram (D major) bling eggs and
trying not to cry (A major)
(D major) Jennifer was getting Isaac

I was (D major) wondering when God left
And why (A major) he didn't say goodbye
(D major)
Verse 5
I (A major) should have spent the day
with my fam (D major) ily
Instead I tried (B minor) and failed to
work (D major) (B minor) all (D major) day long (E major)
Lord, I (A major) should have spent the

(A major) make me want (G major) to carry (A major) on
(D major)

Throughout the day I kept
Hear (G major) ing all the details
Though I (D major) didn't check in much

Some tragedies (D major) you know
They have (G major) no explanation
And the word (D major) "Everything"
don't cover (A major) what you lose
(D major)
Verse 7
So I spent the whole day pacing
Back and forth (G major) all by my

(D major) Questioning the point
And trying to write a song (A major)

On (G major) anything at all
And you can (D major) 't get something right
When (A major) everything feels (D major) wrong (A major)

I (A major) should have spent the day
with my fam (D major) ily

By sundown I was worn out
No (G major) closer to understanding
The (D major) evil things that happen everyday (A major)
My wife (D major) and I shared a beer
And talked (G major) about the future
Agree (D major) ing on the fact that we
would (A major) have to find a way (D major)
Though sometime I don't know how
This world (G major) continues turning
What has happened (D major) will never be undone
(A major) But tomorrow (D major) I think
I'll just try to keep (G major) the day wide open
And as much (D major) as they will have me
Be with (A major) people that I love
