Verse 1
It makes me think about my (G major) mama,
Darwita Thompson,
from Greasy Bend, (C major) Oklahoma. (G major)
Wasn't long ago when I was having,
I couldn't think of anything else
to write about, you know.
That's the problem with
writing songs,
it's all been said before.
(A major) (G major) I've even got a song called, It's All
Been Said Before.
He said, write a song about your mama.
He said, everybody knows
if you don't write a song about your mama,
you won't get into heaven.
(D major) I didn't know that, (G major) but. (C major)
(G major) So at first it was kind of,
I started thinking, well, guy,
you don't realize
that my mom's name is Darwida.
You don't realize that she's from (C major) Greasy Bend,
you know? and (G major) I was thinking this is this is crazy
but then it then it clicked
see my mom plays a mandolin
and it clicked to me
that mandolin (A major) rhymes with Greasy (G major) Ben
and (C major) once that settled (G major) in
I thought (C major) I can do this
(G major) so here's one from a dear sweet mom
who still plays the mandolin today. (C major)
(A major) (G major) (A major) (G major) (A major) (G major) (C major)
(G major) (A major) (G major) (C major) (G major) (A major)
(G major) Hey down in Greasy (C major) Bend,
they're picking (A major) up a storm again. (D major)
The (G major) bridge across the
(C major) Washita is (D major) swaying in,
you (G major) can hear it on the (C major) wind.
Hey, the (A major) music never end (D major) s,
(G major) Darwita's mandolin (C major) keeps (D major) playin'
(G major) (C major) (G major) (A major) (G major) Now
(D major) every hobo
comin' up the (C major) holler
Used (G major) to (D major) leave a secret mark upon her (G major) gate
It was a (D major) sign to all the others
who might (C major) follow
(G major) Sayin' (C major) stop a while and visit man
She'll feed you beans and biscuits,
man
And pick some boilin' cabbage
in down yonder
While you (D major) wait
So down (G major) in Breezy (C major) Bend
They're pickin' (A major) up a storm again
(D major) The (G major) bridge across the (C major) Washita is (D major) swayin'
You (G major) can hear it on (C major) the wind
Hey, the music (A major) never end (D major) s
Dar (G major) wita's man (C major) dolin keeps play (D major) (G major) in' (D major) (G major) (C major)
(G major) (D major) (G major) (A major) (G major) (D major) (G major)
(C major) (G major) (C major) (G major)
(D major) (G major) (C major) (A major) (G major)
(A major)
(G major) Now (D major) yonder comes a
peddler in his (C major) wagon
He's (G major) got (D major) pots and pans
and lots of shiny (G major) things
And he (D major) promised young Darwita
he would (C major) have them
Not (G major) no (C major) box of candy kisses,
no, not no dolly dishes
See, her one and only wish
was for some brand new (G major) Mando (D major) strings
So down (G major) in Greasy (C major) Bend,
they're picking (A major) up the storm again
(D major) The (G major) bridge across (C major) the Boshet
(A major) aw is (D major) swaying in
You (G major) can hear it on (C major) the wind,
hey, the (A major) music never end (D major) s
Darwit (G major) a's mandolin (C major) just (G major) keeps (D major) playing
(G major) Yes, my mama's mandolin (C major) keep (A major) s (D major) playing (G major) (C major) (A major)
(G major) (A major) (D major) (G major)
(A major) (D major) (G major) (C major) (G major) (D major) (G major)
(C major) (G major)
(A major) (D major) (G major) (C major) (D major) (G major)
