Marksman Sam chords by
Stanley Holloway
Stanley Holloway

N/A
Verse 1
G

When Sam Small joined

the regiment,

he were nobita raw recruit,
C
G

and they marched him away
C

one wintry day,
G

his musket course to shoot.

They woke him up at the crack of dawn

with many a nudge and shake.

He were dreaming that Sergeant
D

had broke his neck

and he didn't want awake.
G

Lieutenant Bird came on parade
Am

and chided the lads for mooning.
G
C

He talked in a voice like a pound of plums.
G

His tonsils needed pruning.

Move to the right by fours,

he said, crisp like,

but most severe.

But Sam didn't know he's right from his left,

D

so pretended he didn't hear.

Said Lieutenant, Sergeant,

take that man's name."
G

The sergeant took out his pencil.

He was getting ashamed
D

of taking Sam's name

and was thinking of cutting a stencil.

Sam carried a musket,

a knapsack and coat,
C

spare boots that he'd

managed to wangle,
D

an hatchet, a spade.

In fact, as Sam said, he'd

got everything by a kitchen mangle.
G

"'March easy, men,'

Lieutenant cried,

as the musket range grew near.

"'March easy, me

blushing Aunt Fanny,'
D

said Sam.

"'What a chance with
G

all this here!'
Em
G

When they told him to fire at five hundred yards,

B

Sam nearly had a fit
G

for a six -foot wall
D

or the Albert Hall,
G
D

for all he were likely to hit.

He had fitted a cork

in his musket end

to keep his powder dry,

and he didn't remember to take it out
G
D

the first time he let fly.
G
D

His gun went off with a kind of pop.
G
D

Where his bullet went no one knew,
G

but next day they spoke

of a tinker's moke
D
G

being killed by a cork near Crewe.

At three hundred yards

Sam shut his eyes

and took a careful lame.

He failed to score, but the marker swore,
D

and walked away quite lame.

At two hundred yards
C
G

Sam fired so wild
D

that the sergeant feared for his skin,

G

and the lads all cleared

into the neighbouring field
D
G

and started to dig themselves in.
B

Oh, sergeant,
G

I hear a scraping noise,

said Sam.

What can it be?
D

The noise that he heard were Lifton and Bird,

who were climbing the nearest

tree.

Oh, Sergeant, said Sam,

I've hit the bull,
G
D

what price my shooting

now?

Said the Sergeant,
G

A bull, you gormless fool,
D

yon isn't a bull, it's a cow.
G
Bm

At fifty yards his musket kicked,
G
D

and went off with a noise like a blizzard,

Em
D
G

and down came a crow looking fair

surprised with his ram
C
D

rod through its gizzard.
G
C

As he loaded his musket to fire again

said the sergeant,
G
D

don't waste shot.

You'd best fix bayonets

and charge my lad.
G

It's the only chance you've got.
Em

Sam kept loading his gun
Am
B

while the sergeant spoke
C
Em

till the bul lets peeped
G
B

out at the muzzle.
Em

When all of a sudden it
D

went off bang.

What made it go off were a puzzle.
G
Am
D

The bullets flew out in a kind of spray,

G
D

and everything round got peppered.
G

When they counted his score,

he'd got eight bullseyes,

four magpies,
G

two lambs and a shepherd.
D
Em

And the sergeant for this got a DCM,

and the colonel an OBE.
D
G
C

Lieutenant Baird got a DSO,
D
G

and Sam got five days' C .B.

  • Best Tuning App Ever

    MaddProfessor

I've downloaded many tuning apps before and this one is by far the best. Easy to use, super user-friendly, and they have a bunch of fun different chords and songs to help you learn new music. I highly recommend.

  • Well-Designed App

    Rose the Black Cat

I mostly use this for tuning my guitar, which this app makes ridiculously easy. It also has a large selection of songs to play along to and it helps show you which chords to play as well how to make the shapes with your fingers.

  • Got me back into playing

    Tuliketsune

I got this app to tune an old guitar, and noticed it has a feature that autoscrolls as I play chords to famous songs. For some reason, this was a lot more motivating for me than any other way of practicing guitar. Now I'm actually practicing and remembering the names of chords 🙂

  • Secret weapon

    Brad

Not only is it a tuner (best app tuner I've used personally) but it also has a metronome, games, chords, and a plethora of instruments to choose from and it's SUPER easy to navigate. I love it! Thanks for making an awesome app. From one musician to another, THANKS!!!

  • Very reliable tuner

    theNewPaul

This is a great app! Very easy to use and very reliable, if you are just starting out, you can take a big worry off your mind, by getting in tune quickly and easily with this app. Highly recommended!

  • This is the best guitar tuner ever.

    Caleb Schafli

It tunes your guitar accurately so you can get the best sound. I like all the other little games as well because they teach you how to play different chords and you can learn to identify the chords by listening to them and it is all offline.

  • Great to tune and play

    Lynae T

I love how easy it is to tune and find and play my favorite songs.
